Jared Zimmerman 12/04/2014 ENG 112 Mr. Erik Curren Cathartic Prose: A psychoanalysis of Edgar Allan Poe It’s no mystery that the life of Edgar Allan Poe, one of the earliest practitioners of the short story and one of horror’s most revered authors, was full of distress and tragedy. Plagued by family deaths, financial troubles, and little success in writing, Poe’s life certainly had its fair share of ups and downs, but was he the crazy madman that people rumored him to be? It is a common belief that some of the greatest works of art come from tortured souls who have, by unfortunate circumstances, lived difficult lives. Though the poem is written about a woman named Annabel Lee, it could be possible that Annabel Lee was representative of a woman in Poe’s life, which in turn would make the nameless man of the poem a reflection of Poe himself. There were many women present throughout Poe’s lifetime, but none were as important to him as his wife, and first cousin, Virginia Clemm. Virginia and Poe got married on May 16, 1836 in Richmond, Virginia at the boarding house where Virginia, her mother, and Poe lived (MacLean). At the time, Poe was 27 years old, while Virginia was only at the young age of 13 (MacLean). After getting married, Poe became very devoted to his child-bride. Years and years of being left to face the world alone after his parent’s death’s when he was only a toddler undoubtedly made their love all the more stronger as a result.
